7 Ways To Stay Sane in Your Executive Job Search No doubt about it, job search ranks right up there with divorce, having a baby and moving, as one of the most challenging life transitions you may have to cope with. My friend Tim Tyrell-Smith, a career expert and life coach, offered spot-on advice in his post, How To Sleep Like A Baby During Job Search. In particular, he spoke about overcoming those sleepless, tossing-and-turning nights â" a typical problem for job seekers. Ive added my thoughts to his 7-point framework. More than just a way to deal with sleeplessness, this is really a comprehensive action plan for whatever ails you in job search: 1. Set specific goals each day and accomplish them. I would add that your daily goals should be realistic. Dont set a goal like I will land a job today. Include several smaller goals in your day like, I will spend 1-2 hours on looking for the hiring decision makers at my target companies that are on my list of people to connect with. I will see which Groups they belong to and join those Groups. 2. Exercise and eat well everyday. Important whether or not youre job searching, exercising and healthy eating promote better productivity, thinking, and more restful sleep. Eating well will probably result in losing some weight, which can diminsh snoring, if you suffer from that sleep-depriving habit. 3. Find someone to talk with. Dont keep all your fears and stress inside. Family and friends can be very supportive and helpful in providing a different perspective, and to just unload to. You cant keep all these things in and expect to sleep well and be prepared to tackle your job search to-do list the next day. 4. Take action. If youre floundering and getting nowhere each day, take the time to be introspective, determine what you may be doing wrong and how you can improve. If its been several weeks or several months, and nothing is happening in your job search â" no interviews, no action, no nothing â" you need to figure out how to fix it. If youre completely stuck and dont have a clue how to fix it, it may be time to turn to a professional. 5. Make new friends. Its probably asking too much of your family and current friends to be your only sounding boards. Repeatedly voicing your doubts and negativity can become overwhelming to them, especially since theyre probably not job searching themselves and arent going through the same things. Try turning outside your comfort zone to other job hunters. Look for job search support groups in your area in Job-Hunt.orgs Directory of Local Networking and Job Search Support Groups. 6. Create and maintain a family budget. Creating a transition budget, so youll know just what you have and how long you can stretch it, can be extremely comforting. It may also be helpful to build plans around what if scenarios, like How will we get by if I dont land a job for X number of months? and Where can we, as a family, cut back right now? Getting everyone involved and rallied around the common goal will make saying no that much easier. 7. Work to build confidence. Lets face it. The rejection and setbacks that go hand in hand with job search can be defeating and cause you to question your value. What to do when you feel stuck in your career We all have times when we feel stuck in our careers, when weâre not advancing as fast as weâd like, or it feels like weâre not advancing at all. I know Iâve had those feelings many times in my career and, frankly, the more senior we are, the more likely it is that weâre going to have those situations because the air just gets thinner and there are fewer slots available, and it even happens to the very best of us. I remember back a few years ago, actually, it was many years ago now, and we had a great senior guy heading up our division. He was my bossâ boss, and he was great yet he had been in his seat, in that role for a long time. It had the rest of us wondering, is that the last job he wanted to have? Did he want to advance some more? What was going on in his own career thinking and what did that mean for all of us? So, the usual. One day, we had the chance to actually talk to him about this. It was, sort of, a more relaxed setting and he told us that he had in fact recently had a conversation with his own boss where they talked about the future prospects, and he told his boss the following: he said, âWell, I donât want to die in this job.â We were so amazed at that line, âI donât want to die in this job.â It said so many things in just that one little sentence. First, it was brilliant at saying, âHey, I have ambition to do more, without threatening or being threatening to his own boss. Itâs different than saying, âYes, Iâd like to have your job in 12 monthsâ time.â Thatâs threatening but âI donât want to die in this jobâ is not. Second, it said to us that even somebody that senior does have the same experiences that we have, a feeling stuck at certain points in time. Third, it gave us great hope because he wanted to move forward and that meant we were going to have an opportunity to move forward. So, sometimes that stuck feeling just means that we need a change. But sometimes we canât make that change, or we donât want to make that change, or some personal circumstances make it difficult for us to make that change, or maybe thereâs no obvious change. Even in those circumstances, there are strategies you can employ to stop feeling so stuck and to also set yourself up to advance in the future. So Iâve got three strategies to share with you today. First is, grow the pie. Then thereâs invest in yourself and, of course, invest in others. So letâs take each of those in turn. Grow the pie When I talk about growing the pie, what I mean by that is either doing more with the business you have, or adding to the business opportunities for the company as a whole. So in that first vein, doing more with the business you have, I have an example of a former colleague who is heading up the retailing group, so covering retail companies. He felt he had done pretty much all he could with that particular client group. How could he grow the pie? Well, he had this great idea that said, private equity firms in their portfolios, they have investments in and would like to make investments in retailing companies. So he did a run of all the retailing properties and companies that were being held by private equity firms and he went to his private equity coverage colleagues and said, âHey, shall we go and pitch some of this together?â, which they did and it grew the pie for each of their franchises and also for the firm. Win/win outcome. The other side of things, expanding the opportunity set for your company. A friend of mine was in the litigation department of a big Fortune 100 company and she noticed that there were a lot of possible litigations coming up and that would cost the company a great deal. So she started putting together a process that would help to resolve these disputes early, an early dispute resolution process. This became so successful that it caught the eye of the CEO who wanted her to roll it out to the rest of the company. Because of that, she saved the company, or helped save the company, a lot of money and also got herself a promotion 18 months later. So all of these are win/win. Love it. The second strategy is Invest in yourself This is all about helping to keep up with the rapidly changing world. The things that were hot five years ago are no longer hot today, many of them, and the things that are going to be hot in five years, well, we donât even know what they are. So youâve got to keep up and keep learning those things that are going to be next. Iâll give you an example of that, which is my father. Many years ago, he was 51 at the time, and he was pretty much at the⦠well, he was quite advanced as a scientist in a particular field of medicine. He looked forward and said, you know, âThis field that Iâm in now is pretty mature. Itâs not going to be at the cutting edge going forward.â So what he did was, he started to learn about a related area that was growing and he started to do talks about it, attend conferences on it and really retooled himself, and that turned into some partnerships with others in related fields of science. Today, those fields are called biomedical engineering and bio engineering and, what I understand to be, the most popular majors in college campuses everywhere. So thatâs one aspect of investing in yourself intellectually. Another aspect of investing in yourself is about the physical wellbeing and mental wellbeing so that you can set yourself up to be and operate at your best at all times. Thatâs particularly important when you are feeling stuck. So this means simple things like eating right, getting exercise, sleeping enough. These are things that Arianna Huffington talks about really effectively and, by the way, if you havenât read her book, âThrive: The Third Metric to Redefining Success and Creating a Life of Well-Being, Wisdom, and Wonderâ yet, Iâd recommend you do so. Now, the third strategy is about Investing in others This is so energising. It gives you an opportunity to become a better leader and it also gives you a chance to get out of your own funk. Get out of your own little, you know, my problems type of thing. So get out there and mentor people. Set up networks internally and externally. You might want to just do more to invest in building up the talent in your team. Or maybe itâs something external related to some of the causes that you feel most passionate about, but invest in other people. Youâll feel great! So these are three strategies that you can use individually or together and they are designed to help you right where you are to stop feeling stuck. Iâll just end with three quick takeaways: The first is, take action. Youâve got to take action, otherwise nothing happens. Second, donât just keep grinding it out doing the same things that have been de-energising to you. In fact, more is not always better, right? And then third is always, always, always do your very best because you never know. Every day is a potential audition for that next wonderful opportunity. Itâs something that should be done regularly, but spring offers that special opportunity to check more carefully some important points. In Part I, I examined fast-track hiring, unique resume formats, and the overwhelming use of âskillsâ on resumes. There are three more points that need ârefreshingâ for todayâs job market. A candidate could almost bet on being asked the classics like âtell me about yourself,â or âwhat are your strengths?â Audiences at career workshops typically responded at the 90%+ level when queried about these âtypicalâ questions. That hasnât been true lately. In the last few years, literally hundreds of articles, blog posts, and career âtipsâ have been published about âfavorite interview questions.â Very detailed profiles on the hiring processes of several major companies have been published online with insights on âkey questions.â Whatâs a candidate to do? One solution is more extensive practice, preparing and rehearsing answers to possible questions. This has value but is potentially very time-consuming. A job seeker should certainly monitor career resources for insights on interview questions. But thereâs a companion solution, an alternative that is much more relevant for every job seeker. Many of interview questions you will be asked can be answered with a âsingleâ type of response: your accomplishments. And your accomplishments in your current, and previous, job(s) should be the most important part of your preparation because they are relevant to your interview, your resume, and your online profiles. While it wonât work for all questions, the first lens you should use to answer a question is to connect to a particular accomplishment. âTell me about yourself:â âMy current role isâ¦, and in the last six months, my most significant accomplishment wasâ¦â âWhatâs your greatest strength?â âIn my current position, my greatest strength was demonstrated when Iâ¦â And donât forget that each of your accomplishments should be specific. Resume Basics Thereâs another valuable point on resumes, in addition to the widening range of formats discussed in Part I. I regularly receive resumes from job seekers, family members, and veterans. Iâve noticed fewer typos and grammatical errors. Spell check may be working better than it did years ago although some of the common grammatical errors still appear. However, Iâm noticing a consistent frequency of some other basic errors. Hounded by the belief that resumes must be a certain length, one page or two pages, job seekers attempt to cram their entire career history into a 10pt font with quarter inch margins. They frequently list their education at the top of the resume despite having five or even ten years of work experience post-graduation. They describe each job with nine or ten duties. These might not be considered âerrorsâ but theyâre serious missteps. They can lead to immediate rejection of your resume. What should be on that resume? Itâs back to those accomplishments, two or three starting with your current (or most recent) job. Tell me your story, get me interested, so that I want to know more about what youâve done. Thatâs what tells me about what you might be able to do for me. Thatâs what I want to know. Lies Thereâs been a renewal of interest in lying on resumes and during interviews. Estimates vary but some measures have consistently shown that about 20% of resumes contain lies. Thereâs been both traditional and new research pointing out that lies about education are the most common. Yet, this is perhaps the easiest thing for a prospective organization to verify. Itâs not always easy to verify employment history, often limited to checking dates of employment. The solution is simple: donât lie on your resume, on your LinkedIn profile, or in an interview. Itâs a sure way to get eliminated from consideration. Plus, itâs your sincere presentation of your work history, again those accomplishments, that give you the best opportunity to advance in a job search.
